Areas of interest
With respect to research, Kieran Lee’s principal research interests are in:
- Professional regulation, discipline, liability, and employment/labour law;
- Commercial, company, and corporate law;
- Chancery and private client law;
- Sustainability and environmental; food and waste, and animal rights and welfare law; and,
- Jurisprudence and socio-legal studies.
In addition to LLB dissertation supervision, Kieran Lee welcomes applications to supervise LLM (primary supervisor) and PhD (primary or secondary supervisor) projects covering commercial, company and corporate law; professional regulation, discipline, and liability law, and employment/labour law: please see the School of Law, University of Reading admissions webpages for information on the application process. He has previously acted as a Finishing Supervisor for MJur/PhD projects in the aforementioned areas (University of Durham), and is currently an LLM Supervisor and PhD Supervision Monitor for the School of Law.
Alongside work published or forthcoming in a number of leading journals or edited collections, Kieran Lee is Academic Editor of Jackson & Powell on Professional Liability, a major text forming a part of the prestigious Common Law Library by Sweet & Maxwell (Thomson Reuters), in partnership with the leading commercial set 4 New Square, London. He earlier joined A Dictionary of Law, by Oxford University Press, as Contributing Editor, and presently undertaking research for two long-term publication projects. With respect to teaching, Kieran Lee is experienced in three core areas, which he has taught or supervised at undergraduate and postgraduate level:
- the law of property (land) (University of Reading, University of Cambridge, King’s College London, and the University of Durham);
- the law of equity and trusts (Reading, Cambridge, King’s and Durham); and,
- the law of employment/labour law (Reading, Durham and the Freie Universität Berlin).

Kieran Lee has previously taught the law of tort (Birkbeck College, University of London) (as a postgraduate teaching assistant) and legal systems and methods (England and Wales and comparative) (Birkbeck and FU Berlin) (as a postgraduate teaching assistant and visiting professor).
Alongside his teaching and research, Kieran Lee assumes a number of School and University level responsibilities, which include acting as Director of Academic Tutoring and Academic Tutor and as Module Convener and Tutorial Leader.
Background
Kieran Lee is a Lecturer in Law (Assistant Professor in Law) at the School of Law, University of Reading (January 2020-present). Prior to joining the University of Reading, Kieran Lee was a Teaching Fellow in Law at The Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London (2017-2019), before which he was a Tutor and Researcher in Law at Durham Law School, University of Durham (2014-2017). Upon joining King’s, he was retained by Durham as a Visiting Lecturer and Researcher in Law (2017-2020). He later took up post as College Lecturer and Supervisor in Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge (October 2019-present), and in 2020/2021 he was invited to return to serve as a Faculty Lecturer and Professor in Law at the Fachbereich Rechtswissenschaft, Freie Universität Berlin (visiting and online), having served as the penultimate Erasmus Lecturer and Professor in Law (2019).
Kieran Lee read natural sciences and psychology and neurosciences as an undergraduate before later converting to law as a postgraduate on scholarship, entering university on an access course as a mature student, having earlier been denied the opportunity to obtain school leaver qualifications. Before becoming a lecturer, Kieran Lee trained and worked in psychology and psychiatry for over a decade, supporting patients with complex mental health problems.
