Entry requirements

The DLaw is an exciting opportunity for experienced legal professionals who want to gain formal recognition for the impact they have made in their field. Whether through innovation, leadership, knowledge creation or original research, the programme is designed for individuals who are shaping the future of legal practice.

Applicants should have substantial experience in any area of legal practice, and be able to show evidence of contribution or leadership within their professional sphere. If you are ready to take the next step in your career and turn your expertise into a doctoral level qualification, we encourage you to apply.

Candidates should have, as a minimum, an undergraduate law degree (or another relevant degree).

Preliminary portfolio

As part of your application, you will submit a preliminary portfolio of 2,000 to 3,000 words. This is your opportunity to showcase your professional achievements and demonstrate how your experience positions you for doctoral level study.

Your portfolio should outline:

  • your legal practice experience
  • the contribution, leadership or innovation you have demonstrated
  • the impact of your work
  • your motivation and readiness for the DLaw.

We are happy to offer guidance on preparing your portfolio, including support with ethical considerations. If you are unsure what to include, we can help you shape a strong and compelling submission.

English language requirements

If you are from outside of the UK, you will need an IELTS score of 7.0, or above, with at least 6.0 in the four sub-sections, or equivalent.

Programme duration

The DLaw programme can be started at the beginning of Semester 1 in September or Semester 2 in February.

The programme takes between 4-6 years to complete on a part-time basis.

Make an application

Please apply using the PhD and professional doctorate online application system.

This allows you to complete the necessary information and attach copies of relevant documents, including the details of two appropriate referees and relevant certificates.

Although you'll be working with a specific department and supervisor, all PhD applications must be made centrally. The University will acknowledge your application and then pass it on to our school.
