Studying modern languages at Reading

At Reading, we enable our language students to become multilingual, multicultural and inspiring graduates.

Those with linguistic skills and intercultural knowledge are in high demand as employers look for candidates with languages as an additional asset to other professional skills.

Tailor your degree with our wide range of languages

Our degree programmes allow you to combine up to three languages, at different levels of ability.

We offer French, German, Italian and Spanish as core languages from beginner’s, intermediate and advanced level.

Arabic, British Sign Language, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Modern Greek, and Russian, as well as the core languages, can be integrated into your programme as additional languages from beginner’s level.

We are proud to be one of the few universities in the country to offer British Sign Language as part of a degree.

“The variety of languages and modules that Reading offers were a major factor in my decision. The array of languages they offer is amazing.”

Miranda Roberts, BA Modern Languages (core French and Italian with additional Spanish)

Broaden your horizons with our joint degrees

Our wide selection of joint degrees with languages includes popular subjects such as English Literature, History, Economics, and International Relations, plus a number of programmes offered with the prestigious Henley Business School.

We also offer innovative combinations such as Spanish or French and International Development.

On these pathways, you will specialise in one of our core languages, combining it with your joint subject.

Our BA Spanish and English Language graduate, Sophie, worked as a Business Reporter Kickstart intern at The News, Portsmouth and is now marketing for an award-winning training organisation, PETA Ltd.

In this video, she tells us about the benefits of a joint degree from the student and employer perspective.

Explore our research-led culture modules

The flexibility of our courses allows you to choose your own pathway, and you can adapt your degree to fit your interests with our range of cultural modules. Many of our modules are unique to Reading because they reflect the research specialisms of our expert teaching staff.

On these modules you will deepen your knowledge and perfect your language skills by learning about the cultures and histories of the languages you are studying.

You will study languages in practice, and crafted into inspirational literature, works of art, or film, and learn how they have been shaped by the history and politics of the countries in which they are spoken.

Topics for study include postcolonial writing, revolutionary cultures, music, performance, philosophy, conflict studies, publishing, linguistics, translation and migration.

"Studying at Reading really boosted my confidence in learning German. After not doing as well as I’d hoped in my A levels, I was nervous about how I’d manage at university. However, the small class sizes and supportive lecturers created a safe learning environment where I felt encouraged to actively participate, learn from my mistakes and improve my skills.

"The highlight, though, was definitely my year abroad. Although it felt daunting at first, the opportunity to fully immerse myself in the language and culture was an unforgettable experience. Now, I am fortunate enough to be back in Düsseldorf, working in the same city where I spent my year abroad.

With the support of my boyfriend’s family I was able to obtain the Job Seeker’s visa for people with higher education, which was the process pre-chancenkarte. And then once I found a skilled job, which aligned with my studies and experience, I was given a residence permit with the right to work in that job."
