An international, global-facing, and supportive community
With talented and award-winning staff from four different continents, our outlook and experience is truly global. We have an excellent staff-to-student ratio: this enables us to get to know you as an individual, and to develop a personalised approach to your learning.
We have a designated building where you will find a languages resource centre and study area.
Our student community is highly collaborative and connected. We support student-led initiatives and language societies which organise opportunities to socialise outside the classroom.
Our interdisciplinary approach to language study
The Department of Languages and Cultures brings together a diverse and talented community of academics who combine the study of modern languages with linguistics, history, literature, politics, film, and the visual arts.
At Reading, you will have the opportunity to learn about the rich histories and cultures of your languages of choice, through our range of comparative and culture modules.
We have a wide range of resources that are unique to Reading. We use our world-leading archives in our teaching to enrich your experience of studying French, Italian, German, and Spanish.
We also hold events such as film screenings where you can immerse yourself in the languages you are studying.
Your year abroad
You will spend your third year either working, studying or teaching in another country. Spending a year abroad provides you with an exciting opportunity to master your chosen languages and gain new skills and experiences.
