Laboratory Awareness: an intro to safety in research

INTRODUCTION:

This course provides an introduction to health and safety for postgraduate students and staff working in a laboratory environment.

AIM:

To introduce new laboratory-based staff and postgraduate students to the way in which health and safety is managed at the University, and to introduce the concepts of lab hazards, good laboratory practice, hazard identification and risk control.

OBJECTIVES - ON RETURNING TO THE WORK PLACE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

To enable participants:

  • To understand their responsibilities for safety
  • Identify their local arrangements for safety
  • To understand the most common causes of accidents within the laboratory
  • To work safely within the laboratory when using potentially hazardous equipment or hazardous substances

COURSE CONTENT:

  • Introduction - legal requirements and responsibilities
  • Good laboratory practice, housekeeping and fire prevention
  • Safe use of equipment and electrical safety
  • Chemical hazards and COSHH
  • Biological hazards
  • Accidents and emergencies

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: All new laboratory-based postgraduate students and staff must attend.

It is advisable to attend this course before attending any other scientific safety courses.
