First Aid Training

Four types of first aid course are available. Unless a time is shown below, all courses run from 9.00am - 5pm each day.

In order to determine the First Aid Needs of your School or Function, please complete the First Aid Needs Assessment before asking staff members to book onto a training course. If you are in any doubt about how the first aid provision in your School or Function, please contact your local Health & Safety Coordinator in the first instance.

Anyone wishing to attend a course should book through UoR Learn or contact Health and Safety Services on x8888.

Course 1: First Aid at Work Certificate - Initial - 3-Day

This course must be completed by staff who are to become main University 'First Aiders' in our higher hazard Schools and Functions.

Aim: This course provides the knowledge and confidence to treat casualties and those suffering sudden illness in the work place. On successful completion of the course, candidates will receive a HSE recognised First Aid at Work certificate that is valid for 3 years.

Course 2: First Aid at Work Certificate - Re-qualification - 2-Day

This course is for those who already hold a full First Aid at Work and wish to re-qualify before their current certificate expires. If a certificate has expired, it is necessary to complete the full 3-day course.

Aim: To refresh first aid knowledge providing any recent updates to first aid procedures which allows the First Aider to be confident to treat accident casualties and those suffering sudden illness at work. Successful candidates will receive a new certificate that is valid for a further 3 years.

Course 3: Emergency First Aid in the Workplace Certificate - 1-Day

For those in our lower hazard Schools and Functions who are to act as an Emergency First Aider. Emergency First Aiders can take charge of a situation when someone is injured or falls ill. A certificate is awarded to successful candidates. It is recommended that refresher training is attended every three years.

Course 4: 1-Day Fieldworker's First Aid Certificate

For those in charge of groups of fieldworkers.

On demand - please contact safety@reading.ac.uk if you wish to be placed on a waiting list. A course will be run when there are sufficient numbers.

Due to the demand for this course, it will be run when minimum of 6 participants request it. Each place will be funded at a rate of 50% by Health and Safety Services. The other 50 % will be recharged to the department concerned. A project code will be required before a place is allocated. The place will cost a minimum of £35 per person, with the maximum charge of £47 per person (this will vary according to the number of participants).

Cancellations

Please contact Health and Safety as soon as you know that you are unable to attend. We can often offer your place to someone else. A late cancellation fee of £40 may be charged to Schools/Offices when less than two working days' notice is given of withdrawal. Cancellation by simply not turning up to a session will increase the fee to £50. Courses being taught by external trainers will be charged at the full cost of the place if cancelled with less than two working days notice.
