Your life in the School

Our vibrant and diverse community of staff and students are enthusiastic about using their architectural talent and knowledge to make a positive difference in the world.

We foster a culture of drawing, making and the theories behind these.

You'll learn through a combination of taught lectures, seminars and workshops, and further develop your professional and creative skills through work in the design studio and reviews.

Your learning experience

We provide a dynamic research-driven and project-based learning environment and engage with diverse modes of architectural production, communication and practice.

Taught lectures

Lectures support studio teaching, providing insights into key concepts, methods and theories that inform design work.

Workshops

Develop your creative skills with workshops that focus on digital as well as traditional fabrication and representation methods and techniques.

Reviews

Review sessions, or critiques (crits), allow you to present your ideas to your peers, academics, and external practitioners for feedback on design projects.

Public lectures

Gain an advanced understanding of contemporary challenges and opportunities from internationally-renowned practitioners invited to speak at the student-led public lecture series.

Field classes

Community engagement

Take advantage of opportunities to engage with the local community and better understand the relationship between community and architecture.

Research-based education

In a rapidly changing world, we demonstrate the importance of rigorous research in underpinning new ideas and critical thinking. Our research-based education enables you to enter the world of work as reflective practitioners or as practitioner researchers.

Develop expertise in a range of subjects related to our research area of "urban living", including post-oil futures, sustainable cities, experiential mapping, retrofit and regeneration, and digital practices.

Work experience

You'll have the opportunity to apply for a period of credit-bearing work experience during your studies. Our well-established links with both the architecture profession and the wider built environment sector will help you expand your professional skills and knowledge.

You may also have the opportunity to gain teaching experience, engaging with various teaching and learning styles of studio architecture with our undergraduate cohorts.

Our facilities

The heart of the School of Architecture is on our London Road campus in a redesigned and refitted character building, re-purposing an old library.

You'll have access to dedicated studio facilities, including your own desk and space, available seven days-a-week.

You can also utilise other facilities within the School of Built Environment on our main Whiteknights campus, including digital environments.

Tools and workshops

Our students have priority access to a modelmaking workshop and dedicated technical support.

We offer workshops and activities in areas such as drawing and mapping in the field, model and architectural photography, casting in concrete and plaster, 3D printing, vacuum forming, laser cutting and digital cutting of thin materials.

How we support you

The University of Reading offers a range of support and development services to ensure you reach your full potential while you study.

End of Year Show

Showcase your project and design work to industry at our End of Year Show.

This annual event provides excellent networking opportunities and assists in securing work experience, placements, or jobs after graduation.

Life on campus

Our main Whiteknights campus is set on 130 hectares of beautiful parkland, only a short walk or bus ride away from our London Road campus. The campus is a thriving community and features the Students' Union, Library and places to eat.
