Postgraduate supervision
Jess currently supervises the following PhD students:
- Da Costa: Early Warning of hydrometeorological hazards on a local scale.
- Clare Lewis: Meteotsunamis in a changing climate: The future of coastal vulnerability & resilience. With Plymouth Marine Lab.
- Ommer: Reducing risk to hydrological extremes with Nature-based Solutions. OPERANDUM project. With industry partner Kajo Services.
- Daisy O’Neill: Predicting the ecological and societal impacts of species on the move with climate change in the UK. Funded by NERC SCENARIO.
Recently completed students:
- Arnal: Seasonal hydrological forecasting over Europe. IMPREX project. Funded by Horizon2020.
- Foster: The effect of landscape heterogeneity and change on beetle community composition. Funded by School of Biological Sciences.

Background
Jess has a BSc in Physical Geography, MSc in Wildlife Management and Conservation and a PhD in Landscape Ecology (University of Reading). She is an interdisciplinary geographer with expertise in flood risk management, GIS analysis, landscape change and science communication. Jess works with local communities to help them prepare for flooding and to empower them to take action on sewage pollution in rivers. She regularly engages in the news media and works alongside organisations such as the Environment Agency, Thames Water and River Action Groups to improve policy and decision-making.
Jess is a Visiting Scientist at ECMWF (European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts), a co-Director of the UK Chapter of the International Association for Landscape Ecology (ialeUK); and a Trustee of River Mole River Watch, campaigning to end sewage pollution in rivers.
She also works as a GIS and hydrology/ecology consultant on projects concerning flood-proofing future housing and landscape change in the UK, Liberia, Papua New Guinea, Seychelles and Afghanistan.
