Department life for undergraduates

When you study in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics you'll be part of a friendly, diverse community of staff and students who are passionate about pure and applied mathematics and statistics. We work together to create a welcoming and supportive learning environment that helps you to achieve your goals and make the most out of your time at Reading.

You'll receive a wealth of support from our academics. They are approachable and committed to helping you make the most of your time at Reading as you progress through your degree. 

You'll be assigned an academic tutor who you'll have one-to-one and group sessions with, who can guide you to any additional support you may need during your studies.

We place a great deal of importance on supporting you in the transition to university-level mathematics study. Our staff provide weekly drop-in sessions and you are encouraged to seek help when you need to.

Overall, 98% of our students said teaching staff are good at explaining things (National Student Survey 2025, 98% of responders from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics).

Join a University ranked 4th in the UK for environmental and ethical performance (People and Planet University League 2024/25). We were also the first ever winner of the Times Higher Education (THE) award for Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Leadership in 2023.

As well as learning in lecture halls and seminar rooms, you'll benefit from access to our PC labs, where you'll have the opportunity to learn programming software that is used in industry.

You'll find ample study space in the recently refurbished University of Reading Library.

If you're studying one of our joint degrees, you'll also have access to some of our practical facilities on our campuses. For example if you study finance and investment banking, you'll make use of three dealing rooms, which are equipped with the latest industry simulation software.
