Invigilation

The Exams Office fills nearly 2,000 invigilation slots each year, and our current invigilation team consists of PhD students and a pool of externally appointed invigilators.

To be an invigilator, you must have the self-confidence to command a room of up to 40 students by yourself, giving instructions clearly and authoritatively.

We also require invigilators for our special arrangements venues, for students who have individual arrangements such as extra time or the use of a computer in their exams.

All invigilators must sign up with Campus Jobs first before being recruited by the Exams Team. Please visit https://campusjobs.reading.ac.uk/home.html to register.

If you have signed up to be an invigilator for the Summer Term 2024, it is essential that you attend the training session being run by the Exams Team. The date of the training will be announced in due course.  You will be sent an invitation to training via email.

The current rate of pay for general invigilation in a main venue, effective from August 2023, is £11.02 per hour. The morning session starts promptly at 8.25am and can run to approximately 12.30pm, and the afternoon session is 1.25pm - (approx.) 5.30pm. Sometimes exams are shorter so Invigilators will be sent away earlier; but in this situation we will pay you for a minimum of 3 hours. The rates of pay for invigilating in a Special Arrangements venue are higher and details are available on application through Campus Jobs.
