As an undergraduate student in the Department of Archaeology, you'll be part of a community that is passionate about its subject.

We pride ourselves on providing a friendly and engaging environment where you can learn from your lecturers and from one another, both in the classroom and in the field.

Our small class sizes mean that staff get to know students as individuals, so we are able to provide advice and assistance tailored to your interests and needs.

"The Department of Archaeology has amazing support. The teaching is practical and wide and very hands-on, and in the Archaeology building there’s a room dedicated to undergraduates, where you can sit and study and learn together. We all write our essays in there and talk about all sorts of archaeological things. And some other stuff too!”

Our community

We value every student and staff member in our community, and recognise that we each have unique perspectives, abilities and ideas to offer.

In addition to the Enabled Fieldwork group, we have an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion working group that ensures the values of inclusivity are present in our classrooms, activities and spaces.

We are the only archaeology department in England to hold an Athena SWAN silver award, which recognises our focus on gender equality.

Athena SWAN promotes representation, progression and success for all. It focuses specifically on the advancement of women's careers across higher education in all academic fields. The charter also promotes and recognises work that supports transgender staff and students.

Facilities

Our bright and cheerful Archaeology building is the heart of our department – a home away from home for many of our students.

Along with our specialist teaching labs and artefact collections, we have a dedicated undergraduate reading room, a PC lab, and spaces to sit and chat – all within the same building.

The building is just a short walk from the Library, the Students’ Union building, cafés, and other amenities on the Whiteknights campus.

I soon found that there is a role for everyone and that I could take part in the dig in my own way
