Symbols of compact truncated Toeplitz operators

When Sarason initiated the study of truncated Toeplitz operators in 2007 he posed the question, does every bounded truncated Toeplitz operator have a bounded symbol? This was then shown to be negative in 2010 when a bounded truncated Toeplitz operator was constructed which does not possess a bounded symbol. Further work then gave a characterisation of when a bounded truncated Toeplitz operator has a bounded symbol. In this talk I will consider analogous questions looking at the role of continuous symbols for compact truncated Toeplitz operators.

Fidelity and transversely intersecting Lagrangians

We start with a compact Kahler manifold that one can consider as a phase space of a classical dynamical system. We define the Berezin quantization of manifolds as a family of some special Toeplitz operators. We introduce the quantum state associated with an arbitrary submanifold of a compact Kahler manifold and see that if the submanifold is a point, its quantization is a pure quantum state, and otherwise, it is a mixed state in the semi-classical limit. We define some quantum mechanical concepts such as fidelity as a measure of overlap between a pair of quantum states and see that for two intersecting Lagrangian submanifolds, fidelity can detect the transverse intersection.

Pólya’s conjecture for the disk: a computer-assisted proof

The celebrated Pólya’s conjecture (1954) in spectral geometry states that the eigenvalue counting functions of the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacian on a bounded Euclidean domain can be estimated from above and below, respectively, by the leading term of Weyl’s asymptotics. Pólya’s conjecture is known to be true for domains which tile the space, and, in addition, for some special domains in higher dimensions. I’ll present a recent joint work with Iosif Polterovich and David Sher in which we prove Pólya’s conjecture for the disk, making it the first non-tiling planar domain for which the conjecture is verified. Along the way, we develop the known links between the spectral problems in the disk and certain lattice counting problems. Our proofs are purely analytic for the values of the spectral parameter above some large (but explicitly given) number. Below that number we give a rigorous computer-assisted proof which converges in a finite number of steps and uses only integer arithmetic.

Malliavin’s problem for Beurling generalized primes

One of the central topics in the theory of Beurling generalized primes is the relationship between the counting function of the generalized primes and the counting function of the generalized integers. In this talk we discuss the case when one of the two has an asymptotic formula with a so-called Malliavin remainder x exp(-c(\log x)^{alpha}). (Note that power-type remainders x^{theta} are a special case of this.) We indicate what kind of remainder this asymptotic formula implies for the other counting function. We share some recent work on this problem, and discuss a conjecture about the optimal remainders.

Symmetries of simple operator algebras

In this talk I will start with an elementary introduction of group actions on the Hyperfinite II_1 factor and their classification results by Connes, Jones and Ocneanu. I will then discuss more generalised notions of actions (in particular anomalous actions), how they fit into the framework of “symmetries”, and their study on the Hyperfinite II_1 factor. I will then turn to C*-algebras and discuss some existence and uniqueness results of these anomalous actions in that setting, this turns out to be more subtle than in the case of von Neumann algebras as K-theoretic invariants come into play. The results I will discuss in the C*-setting are joined work with Samuel Evington.

Isosupremic vectorial minimisation problems in $L^\infty$ with general nonlinear constraints

In this talk we discuss minimisation problems in $L^\infty$ for general quasiconvex first order functionals, where the class of admissible mappings is constrained by the sublevel sets of another supremal functional and by the zero set of a nonlinear operator. Via the method of $L^p$ approximations as $p\to \infty$, we illustrate the existence of constrained minimisers in $L^p$ for all large $p< \infty$, which in turn converge to a desired $L^\infty$ minimiser as $p\to \infty$. We further show that the special $L^\infty$ minimiser we construct solves a divergence PDE system which involves certain auxiliary measures as coefficients. This can be seen as a divergence form counterpart of the Aronsson-Euler PDE system which is associated with the $L^\infty$ constrained minimisation problem. This talk is based on joint work with Nikos Katzourakis.

The spectra of some number-theoretic matrices

I will discuss the spectral theory of a family of infinite number-theoretic matrices, whose (n,m)'th entry involves the least common multple of n and m, denoted LCM(n,m). The simplest example of such matrix is {1/LCM(n,m)}, where n,m range over natural numbers. It turns out that an explicit formula for the asymptotics of eigenvalues of this matrix can be given. This is recent joint work with Titus Hilberdink.

Improving semigroup bounds

This talk is based on joint works with Bernard Helffer. Let $[0,\infty[ \ni t \to S(t)$ be a semigroup of bounded operators on a complex Hilbert space. We discuss bounds on $\|S(t)\|$ that can be obtained from bounds on the re- solvent of the generator and some known a priori bound on $\|S(t)\|$ for $t$ in a given interval $[0,a^*[$. Via variational arguments, the results are linked to second order ODE’s and Riccati equations.
