Family Planning in Bangladesh: implementation and health impact

The overall aim of this research is to identify and analyse potential gaps in family planning provision across Bangladesh and assess factors of improvements to reduce unmet needs for family planning through the intersection of population, social and economic geographies, and an analysis of FP organisation and management.

Demo-social, cultural and economic dynamics are shaping FP needs, resulting in Geographic diversity and changes. Put into an economic framing, the use of FP is shaped by offer and demand factors, interlinked within broader complex socio-cultural contexts.

This thesis is focussing on offer factors and how they match the demand. The concept and definition of unmet need for family planning will be critically analysed within the gender development literature, the population policy framing and the global reproductive health discourse before identifying gaps between unmet needs and FP provision and its geographic variation.

The Prime Minister Office of Bangladesh is funding me so that I can contribute in exploring the gaps of Family Planning provision to reduce maternal mortality and child mortality in Bangladesh.

Background

I hold a BA (Honours) and MA in English Language and Literature from the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. I got a MA in Governance and Public Policy from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh and an MSc (with Merit) in International HRM from the University of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom with Bangladesh Government Funding (Ministry of Public Administration) which selects Civil Service Officials with a rigid screening procedure.

I am also fortunate to be one of the fewest officials by the Prime Minister Office of Bangladesh for a first ever full-funded PhD program which has been initiated to strengthen the capacity of the officers to meet the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) set for relevant country by 2030.

I have 16 years of experience working in the Department of Family Planning under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as a civil servant, prior to commencing my PhD from April 2019. I have a special interest in art, aesthetics and literature  and I am a member of several charity/voluntary organizations of family planning, health and nutrition in Bangladesh.
