Supporting neurodivergent staff
Neurodivergence in the UK
Neurodivergence refers to the entire spectrum of cognitive experience, covering those who are neurotypical and those who are neurodivergent. Approximately 15 – 20% of the population is estimated to be neurodivergent (RCGP, 2025).
Neurodivergent health conditions can include ADHD, Autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tic disorders and Tourette’s syndrome among others.
Learning and training
Useful research by the CIPD outlines why neurodiversity matters and the importance of building inclusive, neurodiverse workplaces. You can consult this extensive resource as needed.
At the University of Reading, we have a Neurodiversity at Work training, which will help you develop your understanding of what neurodiversity is, give you an opportunity to hear real-life testimonials of what it is like to be neurodivergent, understand the value of having a neurodiverse workplace, and the relevant legislation on this topic.
Support
If you need help supporting a neurodivergent member of your team or if you yourself need support as a neurodivergent person at work, please contact your HR Business Partner.
